Female Producers And Songwriters: Missy Elliott, Diane Warren And Linda Perry
I wanted to quickly high these three talented individuals that have played a huge part in changing the face of music and also representing for female songwriters and producers.
While alot of people know Missy Elliott for her own music, she`s also one of the most gifted and groundbreaking songwriters and producers on the face of the world. And she actually got her big breakthrough from her production work with Timbaland, that attracted alot of people to the creative duo. Together and separate, Elliott has penned and produced many hit singles that have dominated radio and with each artist that she has worked with, she has very unique way of pushing their creativity and taking their music to the next level.
She has worked with the likes of Ciara, Aaliyah, Beyonce, Monica, Jazmine Sullivan, Mya, Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, Fantasia, Tamia, Keyshia Cole, Tweet, 702, Total, Destiny`s Child, Ginuwine, SWV, Mary J. Blige, Lil' Mo, Karen Clark Sheard, Angie Stone, Jennifer Hudson and many others.
"It comforts me to write every day. I always say my friends live vicariously through me because I’ll listen to them and then put their stories into song form. Monica’s “So Gone” came like that. She was in the studio fussing about something. I overheard her and immediately wrote the song based on what she was arguing about." she continues "It's almost like church — when you go to church, pastor is saying something (and you're) like, 'I swear up and down that message is for me.' I wanted to create something women could feel like, 'I could relate to this record.'""
Diane Warren is one of the most important, successful, award winning and sought-after songwriters of all time. She has virtually written for every big artist imaginable from the likes of Aerosmith, Elton John, Tina Turner, Barbra Streisand, Aretha Franklin, Roberta Flack, Celine Dion, Whitney Houston, Roy Orbison, Eric Clapton, Lenny Kravitz, Pet Shop Boys, Joss Stone, Christina Aguilera, Enrique Iglesias, Jessica Simpson, Mary J. Blige and many more.
Her songs have covered almost every musical genre - she has had number one hits in pop, rock, R&B and reggae "I just love writing a great ballad, something so essential that it reaches across genres. You could almost say the best songs are 'genre-transcendent;' they translate well into a variety of styles sung by different artists."
Prior to establishing herself as a major songwriter and producer, Linda Perry was the lead singer of 4 Non Blondes and wrote the group’s international 1993 hit “What’s Up?”. A year later the group parted ways but her unique songwriting left a great impression and she found a new career direction as a songwriter and producer for other artists, such as Pink, Jewel, Courtney Love, Christina Aguilera, Gwen Stefani, Alicia Keys, Celine Dion, Robbie Williams, Melissa Etheridge, Juliette and the Licks, Lisa Marie Presley, Kelly Osbourne, James Blunt, Cheap Trick, Enrique Iglesias and many others.
"My intention is never to go write a hit. I don’t even understand how to do that. I just can only stay as true as possible, and either one’s going to happen or it’s not. My main focus is always to write a great song. That’s what I do. I don’t write bad songs. I write great songs. Some of them are hits, some of them are not. But it`s clear to me that helping artists with their vision is kind of cool. I got the bug. It’s not me and my drab emotions. It was an escape from myself."
