With this platform I want to continue to highlight and celebrate black artists and black women overall, so I`ve decided to put together a post once each month, featuring one or two impactful artists that push music and the culture forward.
Kicking it off with Missy Elliott, who is truly one of the most amazing on the face of the world as she has displayed unshakable commitment to her craft and to her individuality. She fearlessly throws herself into her music, allowing her listeners to connect with her even more on a deeper level and be pulled into her creative and colourful world. Her delivery is so sassy, soulful and raw - showcasing so much passion and personality. She is so fierce and a rare breed of an artist.
I was about 12 or13 years old when I first heard a Missy Elliott song, it was "Pass That Dutch" which was accompanied by a crazy visual that blew me away. I remember sitting there, very taken by the sound of her voice - witty delivery with a sharp and colourful wordplay, I quickly became a fan. I rushed to the nearest music store and purchased her "This Is Not A Test" album, which served as a great introduction to hip-hop music for me - expending my musical understanding/taste.
I love how she never limits herself from expressing each layer of who she is and showcasing all her talents from rapping to singing to producing and writing. And I love the fact that she dared to embrace everything she is in an industry that told that she was never gonna make it due to her looks and her sound but she made them eat their words as she went on to change the face of music, time after time and breaking and setting records and gaining countless awards along the way.
She has influenced so many of her fellow peers and the new generation of artists to express their individuality and creativity and also gave dancers a platform to showcase talents and shed light on female songwriters and female producers. And 20+ years into her career and her work still gets played non-stop and people still reach out to her to collaborate because her track record is speaks and is heavy, her production and songwriting is so timeless.
And her work with Timberland is truly groundbreaking to this day, together they are the most innovative production teams ever as they have expressed creativity so boldly and fearlessly, blessed us some of the most ground-breaking/timeless music especially in the late 90`s and early 2000`s . No wonder why people continue to hold Elliott and Tim in such high esteem, so I look forward to future projects as they will clearly be outstanding and impactful.
Beyonce is another great artist that has changed the face of music and is very impactful as with each album she has released so far, she pushing herself with each album present a strong image for women all over the world and empower them to keep on evolving and pushing through tough situations. Her albums "Beyonce" and "Lemonade" are by far her best musically offerings as we saw her delivering powerful material that goes beyond any chart position and creating music that finds her coming into her own so beautifully - showcasing so much growth as a vocalist and as a woman, very transparent and honest. Owning her sexuality and displaying new layers of herself to the world and is so unapologetic about it, is so such a beautiful thing to see, especially in the music industry.
We all were introduced to Beyonce as the lead singer of Destiny`s Child, she managed to change music from the get go her vocal delivery on "No, No, No Part 2" she was singing so fast "rap-singing" and still sounded clear enough for you to understand what she was saying. The group went on to make that trademark sound and alot of started to adapt the style into own music.
When the group decided to branch out on their own and they all achieved their individual success. But she had to prove herself to her label at that time and the industry overall as the music scene was already full of artists in the same lane she was going into and people were putting her against others but she never fed into that negativity and had a huge breakthrough and has create a solid legacy of great music.
As she continues to grow she will surely continue to make more impactful music and powerful visuals and I pray that these two music legends can link up again and make more great music together.
