Oprah Winfrey opens about never having the desire to have babies of her own via had a chat with The Hollywood Reporter :“If I had kids, my kids would hate me, they would have ended up on the equivalent of the Oprah show talking about me; because something [in my life] would have had to suffer and it would’ve probably been them." "Gayle grew up writing the names of her would-be children, making little hearts and putting children's names in them. Never occurred to me to do that. I never had a desire. And I don't think I could have this life and have children. One of the lessons I've learned from doing the show is just how much sacrifice and attention is required to do the job of mothering well. Nothing in my background prepared or trained me to do that. So I don't have any regrets about it at all. And I do feel like I am a mother in a broader sense—to a generation of viewers who've grown up with me."
I think she should be applauded for being so incredibly candid about the topic because she is speaking the truth which alot of women share but are scared to voice because society would label them selfish but the most selfish thing is having children knowing that you are unable to provide their needs. More women need to think like this and just be honest with themselves - stop trying to live up to the laws and standards of society - think for yourself and chose the life for YOU that best fits.
Oprah realized that due to the traumas she went through as a teenager - getting pregnant at 14 and giving birth to a stillborn baby: "I don't even know what I thought the plan was going to be. ... You're having a baby out of wedlock, your life is over. So when the baby died – the baby was never brought home from the hospital – when the baby died, I knew that it was my second chance. So I went back to school, and nobody knew. Because had anybody known at that time, I wouldn’t have been able to be head of student council. I wouldn’t have been able to be speaking champion in forensics. I wouldn’t have been chosen as one of the two teenagers in the state of Tennessee to go to the White House conference on youth. None of those things would have happened, and the entire trajectory of my life would have been different."
While some people react negatively to her statement but it`s very understandable because she understands fully the real deep commitment needed for kids to grow whole and into who they are meant to be and she had another mission and she has fully succeeded in that and is creating value with all she does.
