Today we celebrate the birthday of the legendary musical genius Missy Elliott, so me and a couple of the #MEaddicts came together to celebrate our girl on her born-day.
I could sit here and talk about how epic you are. The records you've broken, doors you've opened, the creativity you exude, the legends you've written, produced or collaborated with. I could go on about your catalog and awards and how extensive your career is in this short lived music business, but at the end of the day, we all know this. Whether people chose to or not, they can Google it and find it. The receipts are there! Instead I rather talk about Melissa Elliott.
I've had not only the honor but the privilege to enter a small portion of your life to see the woman behind the artist. Your kindness and humbleness amazes me as much as when you drop a new revolutionary music video. From birthday calls to your biggest fans to Christmas gifts expressing your gratitude. I've had the pleasure to have had face to face convos about the state of music today to you playing new music for me in your new car toy to even chilling with you backstage after tearing down a stage at the Fonatine Bleau.
Never did I once feel uncomfortable or out of place and you welcomed me with open arms like a little brother visiting his big sis. With blind eyes you trusted me with privileged and personal information. A rare gift in this industry! I have been witness to how compassionate caring and loyal you are as the human being behind the artist. I've had the rare opportunity to see the genius at work, directing and creating that magic we all call talent. For this, no words can ever thank you enough or express the gratitude that I feel for welcoming me. Many know the epicness of Missy Elliott but few will know the amazing person you are deep down inside. May God bless you with many more birthdays full of health and prosperity! I love you boo!! Your one and only

I want to start this letter off by expressing my immense gratitude for the great inspiration that you've provided me with over the years, especially these past couple of years of knowing each other. You embraced me with open arms and an open heart and blessed me with some of the most powerful words of wisdom.
The work that you have blessed the world with has seen you displaying great originality from day one as you paved your own lane where you expressed your creativity and individuality freely without feeling the need mold yourself into something you are to be please the narrow minded idea of what the industry thinks a superstar is, which is something you have always been, it just took the world some time to catch on. You use your platform in to inspire more people to do the same thing, celebrating what makes them different and unique.
And I want to thank you for always taking artistic risks and revealing layers of yourself which makes people understand and appreciate your journey and relate to you as a person. Which is something I love about you the most, because with each album you put out they all sound different from each other but represent hip-hop so boldly and displays amazing growth and passion with a lot of heart. And you display your music through some of the most creative visuals ever that do you and your music justice and gives dancers a platform to shine.
We’re all very lucky to have you.
So as you enjoy your birthday we want you to know that you are loved and appreciated all over the world. - Zion

Dear Missy,
Let me start off by saying Happy Birthday and that I love you so much. There is no one with your kind and gracious spirit as well as undeniable raw talent. I never thought in a million years or in my wildest dreams that I would have built not only a connection with you in your music but also a connection with you, spiritually. In addition to your amazing music, your story and the way how you care for people truly inspires me as well as showing us that being BANJI is not only the best thing to do but the right thing to do! Growing up, I always felt like a loner since I didn’t “fit in” with what I thought was the “in” crowd and I used to feel so depressed but your music helped soothe my soul and your story inspired me to be a better person. You taught me how to remain true to myself and my divine purpose as well as own my destiny and truth. If only you knew how much YOU and not just your music has been a blessing to my life as well as the soundtrack to keep me going. My mentor, Godmother, prayer partner, and teacher; Missy, I wish you a Happy Birthday and I hope you have a billion more! I love you so much! *hugs* - Albert Tsibu

I loved “Da Real World” and “Miss E..So Addictive” because it gave me a refreshing whiff of the future to come. It was powerful to me to see rappers spitting lyrics from spaceships or while tearing their heads off their shoulders. I loved how you and Timbaland didn’t give two shits about what was popular within the moment. Although you never got your just due, the sounds and concepts in your albums expanded the world of hip-hop more than any other act. Thank you for pushing those boundaries to include MORE than just street life, crime and poverty.
As a creative, otherworldly artist myself, I list Missy Elliott as one of my biggest influences. Thanks to you, I know that I can be silly and sexy and sickening whether people acknowledge me as “pretty” or not. I learned from you that my unique brand of creativity will get me as far as my courage will carry me. Thank you for being yourself unapologetically and sharing your vision with me and your millions of fans.
Sincerely,
Robert “Forbidden Light” Michael
My dearest Missy!
The first time I was introduced you was through your "The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly)" visual video, it left a weird impression on me because it was so out of the box and I was such a pop music fan that it took me seeing you in Mel B's visual "I Want You Back" to truly embrace you and all you have to offer. More then 15 years later I'm still a fan of yours and I live for your creativity, which has change the music industry forever. I'm so proud of you, you always shock and surprise me cause you're always unpredictable.
On this day I wanna wish you a very happy birthday and on this occasion I'd like to thank you for making me more open when it comes to music and visuals. I wanna thank you for being such a caring, giving, loving and humble person that you are beside being a unique genius. I wish you nothing but the best cause that's what you deserve. The BEST.You're truly one in a million, I love you and I hope to meet you one day. :)- @ZsoltPalffy
